Step by Step guide how to use Block Calculator

Step 1. Enter Block Dimensions

Start by specifying the size of the block you’ll be using. Most standard concrete blocks measure 16 inches in length and 8 inches in height (common in the US). You can also input custom sizes and switch between inches and feet.

Step 2. Define Wall Size & Openings

Next, enter the total wall dimensions. The tool calculates the gross wall area first, then deducts the area taken by doors, windows, or other openings.

Example: A wall 20 ft long and 10 ft high → gross area = 200 sq ft. If you have a door (20 sq ft) and two windows (15 sq ft each), total openings = 50 sq ft. The net wall area becomes 150 sq ft.

Simply type the Wall Length, Wall Height, and the total Openings Area in square feet. The tool automatically subtracts the openings.

Step 3Select Mortar Joint Thickness

Mortar joints between blocks add to the effective size of each unit. The standard mortar joint is ½ inch, but you can choose from 3/8", ½", ¾", or 1" based on your construction method.


The calculator adds this thickness to both the length and height of each block, ensuring the estimate accounts for the space occupied by mortar.


Step 4Set Wastage Percentage

On‑site breakage, cutting, and fitting always require extra blocks. The tool lets you add a wastage percentage – 5% is recommended for most projects. You can increase it to 8%, 10%, or 12% for complex walls.


Step 5Add Price per Block

If you want a cost estimate, enter the price per block in USD. The tool will multiply the final number of blocks by the price and show the total material cost.
